After last week’s publication of this principal question about mandated reporting training of child abuse and neglect for choice school staff, the DPI updated its guidance online.

School leaders can now choose to train their staff with the recently-updated 2023 training materials or use the DPI’s training from 2021, which is now reposted on this page.

Either is acceptable. Choice school staff still have to be trained with one of the two DPI versions within the first six months of hire and then at least every five years thereafter.

The update comes from feedback the DPI received about the 2023 training. Read the department’s message – and updated guidance – about it on the top of this page.

The DPI’s resources are generally designed for public school culture. Private school leaders can emphasize their school’s unique mission and values by following up with its own resources.

All school staff, regardless of participation in the choice programs, are mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. But choice schools have to follow the DPI’s guidance about training. Non-choice schools can use their own resources.
