A seventh grader, Aiden Wijeyakulasuriya, from WCRIS member Blessed Sacrament School in Madison, advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee last week.

The only Wisconsin student in the national competition, he correctly spelled “bahuvrihi,” “burpee,” “glomerulonephritis” and “ctenidium.” And in rounds that asked for definitions of words instead of spelling, he accurately defined “meridian” and “forswear.”

Aiden tied for 21st place with a Texas student after narrowly missing the correct definition of “obviate.”

He previously competed in the Bee in 2019 where he tied for 51st place.

Congratulations to Aiden, his family and Blessed Sacrament! Check out his biography here.
