WCRIS sent a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ahead of a meeting with EPA officials this week about proposed water quality regulations, which could greatly affect schools and daycares that use a private well.

The letter urges the EPA to keep private schools in mind when considering laborious water management regulations that could fall on school officials:

“Let there be no doubt: WCRIS supports private school students, staff and visitors’ access to safe and clean drinking water. We fully support the mitigation of harmful contaminants and chemicals. We welcome this opportunity to help shape clean water rules that can be actually implemented and followed by K-12 private schools.” Continue reading.

WCRIS, alongside the Council for American Private Education (CAPE), have been the voice for private schools across the country on the topic since March.

The bottom line: Schools and daycares that use a private well are encouraged to connect to a municipal water supply – if at all possible – as the opportunity presents itself, whether through new construction or major road repairs. While it may be more costly than using a private well in the short run, using municipal water sources will be cheaper and safer in the long run. The DNR is also looking at implementing such regulations on the state level.

WCRIS will continue to monitor the issue and communicate necessary developments. Please contact us with questions or concerns.
