Sixteen WCRIS members across the state, who operate more than 20 school buildings, were awarded a digital mapping grant from the DOJ Office of School Safety. Thanks to advocacy by WCRIS, the Legislature included private schools when it passed the 2021 law.

The Legislature allocated $2 million for the grant program, all of which has been awarded to 96 schools. WCRIS schools were given $213,105 of that amount. One Catholic school system received over $60,000, an amount comparable to a large public district’s award.

The grant was established to help schools generate digital maps of their school buildings to include — instead of blueprints — in their annual safety submission required by state law.

Saint Peter’s Lutheran School in Reedsburg, a WCRIS member, was interviewed about the impact of receiving this grant. Read the article here. A Madison TV station was also conducting interviews for a story.
