WCRIS testified to the Assembly Education Committee last week, ensuring that private schools were represented in conversations about proposed Assembly Bill 53

The bill would require public high schools and high schools in the Parental Choice Programs to report any criminal activity that occurs on its grounds on weekdays from 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. The statistics would be included on schools’ annual report cards from the DPI.

WCRIS testified for “information only.” While WCRIS has been on the forefront of advocating for school safety, there are important considerations about the logistical implementation of the bill.

The bill is scheduled to be voted on by the whole Assembly next week and a companion bill has been sent to the Senate Education Committee, which can make changes.

It was supported by the Milwaukee Police Association, which testified in favor. It was opposed by the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Wisconsin School Psychologists Association and Wisconsin School Social Workers Association. Registering or testifying for information only was WCRIS, Wisconsin Catholic Conference and Wisconsin Family Action.

WCRIS also met with the Governor this week, attending a luncheon hosted by an influential Madison non-partisan group.

Of course, he didn’t voice support for parental choice, but he did admit that “education is where economy starts.” In the short time he addressed K-12 education issues, he emphasized literacy improvements and mental health resources.

WCRIS is hard at work for you, and your membership makes that possible. Thank you!
