Radon, a gas formed from the decaying of uranium and radium found in rocks, is the second-largest cause of lung cancer.

Radon exposure is often thought of as a homeowner’s problem, but schools are not immune to radon and outside of homes, schools are the second largest contributor to radon exposure. New and old school buildings are both at risk.

Although not required by law, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) recommends that schools test for radon every five years or after any major building projects.

Schools should contact radon testing professionals to conduct tests in your buildings. There are short term kits that can be purchased and schools should contact their county municipality for information on acquiring these test kits.

Please see this DHS flyer on radon in schools for more information.
