A WCRIS high school graduate has been honored with a state-wide Rising Star Award from Wisconsin Women in Government (WWIG).

The award honors a woman who has been in her profession for 10 years or less, but has demonstrated excellence by making an extraordinary impact in her profession relative to her years of service.

A graduate of Dominican High School in Milwaukee, Makda Fessahaye serves as the Administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections’ Division of Adult Institutions. She is responsible for 36 correctional facilities.

Makda also serves in several leadership positions. She is the immediate past president of the Wisconsin Association of African American Lawyers and the Marquette University Law School Diversity Recruitment Committee. In 2018, she was among the law school’s “Rising Stars.”

In 2019, Dominican High School selected her as the Young Alumni of the Year, and the Wisconsin Law Journal named her one of its Up and Coming Lawyers. She graduated from Northwestern University and earned her Juris Doctor from Marquette.

It’s an honor for private K-12 schools in Wisconsin that a WCRIS graduate has been recognized for her leadership by WWIG, which is a well-respected and influential organization among state policymakers.
