With the input from school leaders across the state, including WCRIS, Governor Scott Walker today called for a special legislative session to address the issue of school safety. Gov. Walker’s School Safety Plan will include $100 million in funding.

The School Safety Plan includes the creation of the Office of School Safety. The new office would work with law enforcement and schools to create safety plans and training opportunities. Gov. Walker’s plan also calls for a $100 million. The program would allow schools to improve safety in building security (doors, locks, etc.), training, and school resource officers.

WCRIS is continuing to monitor the special session to ensure that private and independent schools have an equal opportunity to improve their school safety and create a better learning environment for their students.

The session is scheduled to start today and includes six legislative proposals that will require review and action by the state legislature. If WCRIS advocacy is needed, an alert will be provided in Current Events.

The State special session is called just after the Federal STOP School Violence Act of 2018 passed the US House of Representatives earlier this week. The bill also calls for grant money to schools.
