To represent our members, WCRIS is one of about 15 organizations that serves on the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety’s Advisory Committee.

WCRIS was specifically thanked during last week’s meeting for supporting the Office of School Safety’s (OSS) legislative initiatives and for our help with private schools’ Jan. 1 safety submissions.

School safety should be a continuous conversation at your school. Here are some resources from the OSS to help you:

1. Digital Mapping Grants: An additional $2.5 million has been added to this opportunity to help schools obtain digital maps of their buildings. The technology of the maps makes your school’s layout more accessible to law enforcement during an emergency situation than blueprints.

The OSS is hosting three free webinars about how to write a grant application, which includes time to complete your application for a digital mapping grant alongside OSS staff who can help you. Register here.

2. Social Media Threat Checklist: Go here for a template you can use to assess a virtual threat, created by the Kenosha Unified School District with help from the OSS.

3. Free Training on School Bombing: Learn more about the March 28 virtual “Understanding and Planning for School Bombing Incidents” course here.

4. Speak Up Speak Out Tipline (SUSO): This effective tool recently received its 10,000th tip since its inception in 2020. Only a handful of counties haven’t submitted a tip. Read more about the impact of the tipline, including real instances of how SUSO helped keep school communities safe.
