DPI Superintendent Race

Election pundits were caught off guard Tuesday (2/17) when the two candidates who made it through the primary election for State Superintendent ran a virtual tie.

The underdog, Deborah Kerr, and Jill Underly, the establishment candidate, each received about 27 percent of the vote. The other five candidates each garnered between about 8 percent and 16 percent of the vote.

These two top vote-getters will face off in the April 6 general election, which appears to be shaping up as a race between the candidate endorsed by the teacher’s union (Underly) and the candidate endorsed by a slew of private school parents, retired private school leaders, and reform-minded public school advocates (Kerr).
