Adds CPR Training for 7-8 Graders

Governor Walker signed a new bill creating Act 390, requires all students in grades 7 through 12 be taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR) in any health education course.

The instruction must be based on a program developed by either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association (AHA), or done through nationally recognized, evidence-base guidelines for CPR and CCR training. Instruction must also include automated external defibrillators (AED).

There is no enforcement mechanism in the bill. There is no funding available to support the costs of this new law on schools.

The law requires schools to offer this instruction in any “health education course.”

The bill takes effect for the 2017-18 school year, so WCRIS schools have one school year to plan for the addition to your curriculum. WCRIS is working with the American Heart Association to identify free resources for WCRIS schools, to help you comply with the law.

In the meantime, it may be wise to reach out to local hospitals or clinics and see what kind of help they may be able to offer your school.

Be sure to read WCRIS Current Events often for more information on resources available to help you comply with this new law.
