High- and middle-schoolers across the state captured the importance of the First Amendment in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation’s (WNA) Civics Games writing and cartoon contest.

Kenyon Hill, a seventh grader from Kenosha’s Saint Joseph Catholic Academy, won first place with a “letter to the editor” in the middle school division. Winners received cash prizes, certificates and the opportunity to be published by newspapers across the state.

Hill wrote, “When I grow up, I look forward to being able to vote for a candidate that I choose, speak up for what I believe in, worship God, and get to know people that aren’t like me.” Read the entire letter.

Find a list of all the winners here. If any of the high-school awardees are graduates of your K-8 school, please notify WCRIS.

This contest is only one part of WNA’s Civics Games. The competition will continue later this year with head-to-head matches of student teams answering civics-related questions. The deadline to sign-up is Feb. 20. Learn more here.
