Spring and early Fall are the perfect time to bring a school group to Madison to visit our state Capitol building, which stands just a few feet shorter than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Students will gain a lasting impression about their state government when they visit the marvelously ornate and stunning building.

A free museum up near the dome provides a great lesson in history, architecture and just plain fun stories about our state government. From there, if it’s after Memorial Day, students can enter the observation deck and see Madison from on high.

Construction on the Capitol began in 1906 and was completed in 1917. Each year more than 500,000 people visit, including school groups, scholars, vacationers and visiting heads of state.

The Capitol is home to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the Offices of the Governor and Attorney General and both the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly.

School groups can book a free Capitol Tour online here.
