Thank you for joining us for this important workshop, May 19-20, 2025!
If you have any questions, please contact WCRIS.
Schools play a critical role in crisis prevention and response, meeting not just the needs of students but also of staff, families and often the local community! To ensure all students and staff feel safe at school, schools must have plans that encompass preparedness, prevention, response and recovery, both short- and long-term, for any type of traumatic incident. School safety preparedness must consider crisis as a mental health and physical health and safety risk.
We’re proud to be partnering with the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and certified trainers from the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Office of School Safety (OSS) to host the important training session from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), PREPaRE Workshop 2: Mental Health Crisis Interventions: Responding to an Acute Traumatic Stressor in Schools!
This workshop gives school leaders and school counselors tools to provide immediate mental health crisis interventions to students, for any type of trauma: the death of a parent or grandparent, a loved one with cancer, being involved in a car accident, parents going through a divorce, bullying and cyberbullying and so much more. The last two school shooting incidents in Wisconsin, and even the incident in Tennessee, all involved students.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, threats against schools are increasing. In several instances, those who carry-out an attack, or attempt to, have mental health challenges stemming from traumatic events. Intervening and helping individuals who have experienced trauma not only helps them in the short-term, but can also be considered a long-term preventative school safety measure.
Workshop Goals
This workshop develops the knowledge and skill required to provide immediate mental health crisis interventions to the students, staff and school community members who have been simultaneously exposed to an acute traumatic stressor.
The knowledge and skill developed within this session also helps to build a bridge to the psychotherapeutic and trauma informed mental health response sometimes required to address challenges associated with trauma exposure. After participating in this incredible opportunity, school leaders and staff will:
- Report reduced anxiety and fear associated with the provision of school mental health crisis interventions;
- Report increased knowledge and confidence associated with the provision of school mental health crisis interventions;
- Identify variables that help to estimate the number of individuals traumatized by a crisis;
- Recognize the difference between common crisis reactions and mental illness;
- Identify the elements of school crisis preparedness specified by the PREPaRE acronym;
- Recognize risk factors that predict psychological trauma;
- Identify the warning signs that indicate psychological trauma;
- Place PREPaRE mental health crisis interventions on a multitiered continuum ranging from least to most restrictive; and
- Match the degree of psychological trauma risk to the appropriate school crisis interventions.
Who Should Attend?
PREPaRE Workshop 2 will benefit any individual at your school who’s filling the role of crisis intervention specialist. This includes school mental health staff (school psychologists, social workers, counselors and nurses), administrators and other individuals from your school that are as providers of psychological first aid.
