Big Changes: New Website and Online Application Process

The Kohl Foundation has launched a new website with an expectation that all nominations and applications will be filled out online.

Teachers must be nominated for a Kohl Fellowship by October 6, 2017 before they can apply. Nominations can be completed online, here. This deadline has been extended for an additional two weeks from the original due date of September 22.

All of the guidelines for Principal Leadership, Teacher Fellowship, Student Excellence, and Student Initiative Scholarships can be found online on the Kohl Foundation’s new website. Click “Read More” below to review the website, nominate principals and teachers, and learn about the online application process.

If you are having trouble with the new Kohl website, please contact Kim Marggraf at the Foundation at marggraf@excel.net or by phone at (920) 457-1727.

Upcoming Kohl Deadlines

As mentioned, the nomination and application process for the Teacher Fellowship awards and Outstanding Wisconsin Leadership (Principal) awards are to be completed online. Once a teacher or principal has been nominated they should receive a link, within 48 hours, to login to the application portion of the new website where they complete an application for the award.

Please note, applications can be started and saved for later, so make sure nominees and students applying for an Excellence Scholarship understand that they do not need to complete the entire application in one sitting.

Mark your calendars with the following Kohl award deadlines:

The Teacher Fellowship applications are due November 22, 2017 to the teacher’s diocese or jurisdiction head office. Once you have completed your application you will receive an email confirmation with a copy of your application. Please print and mail or email forward your email confirmation with application attached to the appropriate person at your diocese or jurisdiction.

The Outstanding Wisconsin Leadership award applications are due December 1, 2017 to the principal’s diocese or jurisdiction head office. Once you have completed your application you will receive an email confirmation with a copy of your application. Please print and mail or email forward your email confirmation with application attached to the appropriate person at your diocese or jurisdiction.

The Student Excellence Scholarship applications are due November 22, 2017 to the student’s school’s diocese or jurisdiction head office. It is recommended that schools set a deadline for students to complete these applications ahead of the final deadline to make sure principals have time to electronically sign each application and mail or email forward their student application(s) to the appropriate person at your diocese or jurisdiction.

Please note: If your school’s policy includes confidential student recommendations or in general, you do not want students to read/review the required three letters of recommendation, you will need to have the students give you their username and password for the Excellence application and upload the recommendations after the student has completed his/her application.

If you are unsure of which diocese or jurisdiction your school belongs to please click “WCRIS Schools Map” below and find your school. Additionally, your school’s diocese or jurisdiction’s head office corresponds to a Board member on the WCRIS Board of Directors. Once you identify your diocese or jurisdiction, you can view which central office to send your completed applications to, by going here on the WCRIS website.

If you have questions about the Kohl award process please contact WCRIS at wcris.staff@wcris.org or by phone at (608) 287-1224.

Free Online Civics Instruction
WisconsinEye Debuts "Civics in the Classroom"

WisconsinEye hosted their first-ever In the Classroom Fellowship program this past summer, for educators who created original content for WisconsinEye programming for use, for free, by their fellow teachers in our state’s classrooms.

The focus of the program was to show the purpose of WisEye.org as an absorbing and important resource for Wisconsin’s teachers and students. It was also an opportunity for interested teachers to develop lesson plans for use across the state in classrooms this school year.

The In the Classroom Initiative has lesson plans and curriculum guides, including videos, worksheets, discussion questions and more on topics such as electing your representatives to the opioid addiction epidemic.

Each Fellow’s lesson plan can be accessed on the WiconsinEye website’s Classroom page, by clicking “Read More” below.

Opioid Epidemic
Free Film Aids Your Prevention Efforts

A free resource is now available for private school principals who want to help educate their school, students and community on the opioid epidemic and spread prevention awareness.

WisconsinEye has released a new opioid documentary, Straight Forward: The Truth About Addiction, which is now available online for viewing.

WisconsinEye is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization focused on providing the public with information on our state government and civics education.

The goal of WisconsinEye is to have this film screened in every school in Wisconsin. WCRIS has watched the movie and recommends screening the film in your high schools. You may also consider showing the movie to 7th and 8th-graders, however that should be at your discretion and based on the maturity level of your middle school students. Please review the movie ahead of time, if you have concerns over showing this material to your students.

The documentary targets the opioid addiction epidemic and discusses real-life interviews with recovering addicts from Wisconsin, including teens and young adults. The point of this movie is not a “scare tacit” but a conscious effort to discuss addiction as a disease, what can cause addiction and how those struggling can find help and support.

“The message is as raw and disturbing as it is vital and inspiring,” said Jon Henkes, president and CEO of WisconsinEye. “If we can help even one person avoid the trap of addiction, this will have been a successful endeavor.”

If you are interested in showing the documentary and using the instructional materials that accompany it, please click “Read More” below.
