The identification and management of dyslexia will be a topic of study for a special legislative committee during the coming months.

Many private K-12 schools serve children with dyslexia and their ability to do so has been enhanced by the expansion of the Special Needs Scholarship Program. For that reason, WCRIS will monitor the Committee’s work and any recommendations it makes to ensure private schools are included, as far as practicable or advisable.

The Study Committee is directed to, among other things, “review current screening, identification, school intervention and treatment protocols for dyslexia in K-12 schools; to examine state statutes and regulations on literacy outcomes for students with dyslexia; and to value the effects of dyslexia on literacy outcomes in the state.” Their full charge is here.

The Study Committee on the Identification and Management of Dyslexia will be chaired by Rep. Bob Kulp (R-Stratford). The Vice Chair will be Sen. Patty Schachtner (D-Somerset). The remaining seats on the committee will be filled with legislators and knowledgeable members of the public who are recommended by organizations with expertise on the subject matter. The Joint Legislative Committee and the Legislative Council will make the appointments.

The committee will meet through Fall with an eye towards making recommendations that could be offered as legislation in the 2019-2021 budget session.

It was just one of ten special study committees and committee chairmen that the Joint Legislative Council has approved for work during the remainder of the 2018 Legislative session.
